Friday April 15th the first mosaic stones of the immense glass mosaic ceiling were placed in the ceiling of the artwork ‘Amsterdam Oersoep’ in the Beurspassage of Amsterdam. City Council member of Art and Culture, Kajsa Ollongren, and Chairman of the Amsterdam City Centre District, Boudewijn Oranje, stepped onto a lifting ramp. Under the watchful eye of the press, artists Hans van Bentem, Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam, property developer Bouwinvest and artproducer Mothership they had the honour of placing the first stone. Actually, the first stone consists of a mat that carries 225 little mosaic stones. The total amount of mosaic stones used in the ceiling will be one million one hundred fifty thousand in total. Ollongren raised her glass in toast of the artwork: ‘a valuable addition to the city and to the center district.’ An ambition that we’ve been working on behind the scenes for a while is finally taking shape in this passage.

More information about the Artwork ‘Amsterdam Oersoep’ can be found in the this article in the Dutch newspaper Parool with BouwInvest and Mothership.
